Antique Kobo Daishi Wooden Zushi Shrine – Edo Period Japan
Antique Japanese wooden zushi shrine containing a seated statue of Kobo Daishi (Kūkai), founder of Shingon Buddhism. A complete Edo period devotional altar consisting of the shrine cabinet, pedestal and hand-carved statue.
This antique Japanese devotional object consists of a traditional wooden zushi shrine containing a seated statue of Kobo Daishi (Kūkai), one of the most important figures in Japanese Buddhism. The shrine cabinet with its opening doors protected the sacred figure and was traditionally used in temples or private household altars.
Kobo Daishi lived from 774 to 835 and founded the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. After traveling to China he returned with esoteric teachings that would have a profound influence on Japanese religious life. In addition to his religious importance he was also known as a scholar, calligrapher and educator. He is traditionally associated with the Shikoku pilgrimage, a spiritual journey connecting 88 temples that continues to attract pilgrims today.
The sculpture depicts Kobo Daishi seated in monastic robes. In one hand he holds prayer beads symbolizing meditation and devotion, while the other hand holds a scroll representing his teachings. The statue sits on a wooden pedestal placed inside the shrine cabinet.
Traces of original pigments and lacquer remain visible on the surface, while the shrine and pedestal show natural aging and wear consistent with Edo period devotional objects. The shrine, pedestal and statue together form a complete religious ensemble typical for Japanese Buddhist house altars.
