Description

Antique Balinese Priest Figure – Pendeta Sculpture, ca. 1900–1925

This striking wooden sculpture represents a Pendeta (priest or ritual elder) from Bali, Indonesia, and was most likely created around 1900–1925. It was carved in the traditional Balinese Topeng (masked theatre) style, featuring a theatrical pose, expressive face, and ritual vessel held in one hand.

The figure stands 59 cm tall and retains its original polychrome pigments, which have developed a beautiful matte patina over time. Visible age cracks, natural surface wear, and the absence of any modern coating confirm the authenticity and historical character of the piece.

Such priest figures were used in temple performances and processions, often representing wisdom and spiritual authority within Balinese Hindu culture. This particular example is fully carved in the round, with attention to detail across all sides – rare for ritual statuary of this type and size.
