Description

Antique Balinese Pendeta Ritual Priest Figure – ca. 1800–1850

This rare hand-carved wooden statue represents a Pendeta, a Balinese Hindu ritual priest. Traditionally, Pendeta figures embody wisdom, protection, and spiritual authority, placed in temple niches or private altars as guardians and ceremonial icons.

The figure is made from dense tropical hardwood and decorated with original mineral pigments and traces of gold leaf in ornamental areas. Dating from ca. 1800–1850, it shows visible aging through oxidation, pigment wear, and natural shrinkage cracks typical of authentic early devotional pieces.

The Pendeta holds a ritual vessel and wears a string of beads across the torso, signaling its ceremonial function. The figure’s expressive face, ornate robe, and aged surface reflect both spiritual purpose and historical authenticity.
