18th Century Fire-Gilded Bronze Bust of Buddha Shakyamuni – Ladakhi Himalayan Art

Description

This exceptional fire-gilded bronze bust of Buddha Shakyamuni, dating to the 18th century (ca. 1750–1800), originates from Tibet or Nepal (with Ladakhi influence). Standing 17.5 cm high and 13.5 cm wide, and weighing 1.2 kg, it is a solid, hand-cast devotional sculpture using the traditional lost-wax method.

The calm, meditative face of Shakyamuni Buddha features finely stylized snail-shell curls and an ushnisha (cranial bump), symbolizing spiritual enlightenment and inner peace. His elongated earlobes and subtle smile embody the timeless wisdom of the Buddha.

Unique Feature: The reverse side of this bust is meticulously engraved with narrative scenes — likely Jataka tales or key episodes from the Buddha’s life — making it not only a devotional icon but also a piece of storytelling art. This detail suggests it was once used in private monastic rituals or as a didactic tool in spiritual teachings.

Authenticity & Condition:

  • No modern repairs or machine tooling

  • Original fire-gilding preserved in deeper zones

  • Natural patina, mineral-rich oxidation, and fine crystal deposits inside confirm its age and origin

  • No synthetic lacquers or modern coatings detected under UV light

Use & Spiritual Significance:

This bust radiates protection, spiritual clarity, and wisdom. Ideal for altars, meditation spaces, or as a meaningful art piece. It’s a rare and collectible item that carries deep spiritual and cultural resonance.
